Just keep paddling

Anna Moreno and boyfriend Marc Martin, from Catalonia, enjoy kayaking through the rushing waters off North and South Stack.  “The hardest part was crossing the breaking waves,” confesses Anna. “I capsized about five times but I’m very happy I managed to do an Eskimo roll. It was exhausting but I really enjoyed the experience.”

Instructor, Nigel Dennis of Holyhead-based Sea Kayaking UK was the first man to circumnavigate Britain in a kayak.  “The tide flows at four to six knots around Anglesey’s coast, which creates large seas in certain areas,” he explains. “That is what kayakers want for improving their skills.”

Every day Anna, Marc and the rest of their group tackle a different challenge, including surfing the wind-driven waves off Rhosneigr beach.

The kayaks contain everything you need except water. They have bilge pumps, compasses and compartments for tent, sleeping bag, food and a stove, so you can start paddling and just keep going.

“Sea kayaking is a way of being connected to nature and allows you to reach places you can’t reach in any other way,” says Anna.

Not that it has to be all blood and thunder, you can paddle in a flat calm if you’re a beginner the attraction is in being completely independent.

Anglesey is arguably the UK’s top destination for water sports. Some of which, are for adrenalin junkies only. Like kite surfing - former British champ Alex Tritten of Rhosneigr will show you how, or coasteering.
