Bull Bay Golf Course

“I often get asked about Bull Bay Golf Club’s location” says John Burns, the club’s director of golf, resident PGA professional, marketer and a few other things besides.

“So I tell them. On a map, draw a horizontal line, 67 miles west of Liverpool, into the Irish Sea, and that is where we are – the most northerly golf club in Wales”.

There is nothing manufactured or designer-made at Bull Bay, home of this year’s Ryder Cup Wales Welsh Open Young Professionals PGA Championship. “It is a natural golf course. Mother Nature intended it to be a golf course, and that is exactly what it is. It can be benign at the first tee, and then a few hours later, blow you and your clubs towards the sea.

No day is the same, and that is what makes Bull Bay and Anglesey golf so challenging” says John, who also says that a tough Irish breeze can add a few hundred yards to the card.

John is something of a missionary for Bull Bay, and the Anglesey golf courses. There are four 18 hole courses and three nine hole challenges on the island, and you can obtain an “Anglesey Golf Pass” for £79 for five of the courses, which is ideal for the holidaymaker.

“We hope” says John, “that we will benefit from the Ryder Cup coming to Wales in 2010, and although we are a fair bit away from the Celtic Manor in Newport, I can assure you that our 17th hole will challenge anyone. It is a 433yard, right hand dog-leg, full of decisions and gambles”. (He does get enthusiastic at this point.) “You can easily become a cropper on it, even if you are having the best round of your life”.

Bull Bay challenges the best, and the recognition from the PGA is enough to entice the golfer who likes a challenge. And a genuine welcome.
