Tidal restrictions on the coastal path

Rhosneigr

To help you plan your walk, the information below gives an indication only of where you can expect to see restrictions to access at certain states of the tide. It is strongly recommended that you consult a tide timetable before setting out.

Of the entire 125 miles / 200km of coastal path, about 10% (12 miles /20km) falls along the shoreline. About 5% of the path ( 6 miles / 10km) is actually on the foreshore, that is between mean high water and mean low water. Access along these sections is to some degree restricted by the rise and fall of the tide.

The Liverpool and Irish Sea tide timetable is available from most post offices and newsagents on Anglesey, or directly from Laver Publishing .You can also print five day predictions for specific areas of Anglesey from the Admiralty EasyTide website.

Tidal Restrictions

Heights of tides detailed in the text relate to those stated in Laver’s Liverpool and Irish Sea Tide Table and are not actual heights. The term ‘high tide’ refers to an average high tide; that is between neap and spring tides. Please note restrictions will be greater during higher seasonal and spring tides.

Section 1 – Holyhead to Porth Trwyn (Llanfaethlu)
The Alaw estuary currently divides this section in half, and there is no safe recommended crossing. Refer to the route description for further information
End of Stanley Embankment to Gorad Beach (beach option) (SH285 799)
Along the banks of the Alaw river (SH309821) Porth Trefadog (SH291 861)
All of these are accessible apart from up an hour around high tide.

Section 2 – Porth Trwyn (Llanfaethlu) to Cemaes
Crossing of outlet of Cemlyn lagoon (SH329 935)
The causeway across the outlet of Cemlyn lagoon is accessible during most tides, although on spring tides (above 30ft) it may become covered for up to an hour around the time of high tide. If you are unable to cross, use the lane past Plas Cemlyn as a pleasant alternative.

Section 3 – Cemaes to Amlwch Port
Porth Padrig, Cemaes (SH375 944)
This beach is accessible apart from an hour around the time of high tide. The inland alternative is a convenient walk up a lane to St Patrick’s church.

Section 4 – Amlwch Port to Moelfre
Traeth Dulas (SH478 884)
Access is available apart from up to an hour either side of high tide. However, as this is an estuary it should be remembered that the tide does come in very quickly.

Section 5 – Moelfre to Pentraeth
Porth yr Aber (SH512858)
Benllech – around Benllech Isaf Café (on joining Ffordd Cynlas) (SH522 827)
Red Wharf Bay – Porth llongdy Uchaf to Talgwyn (SH525 801)
The short section on the shore at Porth yr Aber and around the café on reaching Benllech is accessible apart from an hour around the time of high tide, as is the section between Porth Llongdy Uchaf and Talgwyn at Red Wharf Bay.

Section 6 – Pentraeth to Beaumaris
Red Wharf Bay – 250m either side of ‘Wern Hall’ lane (SH552801)
Lleiniog to Fryars Bay (north of Beaumaris) (SH619 787)
The short section of shore at Red Wharf Bay, just before joining the sea wall is accessible apart from at high tide, for high tides above 30ft / 9 metres.
The Lleiniog to Fryars Bay section is accessible apart from up to an hour either side of high tide, but remember it is about 2km in length so you’ll need to allow ½ an hour.

Section 7 – Beaumaris to Menai Bridge / Llanfairpwll
South of Plas Llanfair, Llanfairpwll (SH531 709).
A raised walkway, together with the access to it along the shore past Nelson’s statue, is accessible apart from an hour around the time of high tide on spring tides.

Section 8 – Moel y Don to Dwyran
South of Plas Porthamel, Llanedwen (SH503 671)
South of Tal-y-Foel pier, Brynsiencyn (SH472 643)
Stepping stones over the River Braint, Dwyran (SH440 647)
The sections of foreshore south of Plas Porthamel, and Tal-y-Foel pier are accessible apart from up to one hour either side of high tide, as are the stepping stones.

Section 9 – Dwyran to Aberffraw
None
Although occasionally Llanddwyn island (SH390 634) gets cut off at very high tides – above 30ft / 9 metres.

Section 10 – Aberffraw to Four Mile Bridge (Valley)
Porth Lleidiog (SH348 678) and Porth Cwyfan, Aberffraw (SH339 683)
Traeth Llydan, Rhosneigr (SH319 725)
Inlet at Glan Rhyd Isaf (SH292 776)
All these shores are accessible during most tides, and are only really affected by seasonally high tides (above 30ft / 9 metres). Porth Lleidiog can be tricky if you reach it at directly high tide, and access from Traeth Llydan up the slipway into Rhosneigr can also be affected.

Section 11 – Four Mile Bridge to Trearddur
South of Four Mile Bridge (SH280 782)
West side of Borthwen beach, Rhoscolyn (SH270 749)
The shore south of Four-Mile-Bridge is submerged for up to an hour around the time of high tide, and Borthwen beach can be affected if reached at the time of a high tide.

Section 12 – Trearddur to Holyhead
None
