'Poor Taff': A London View of the Welsh People

Starting from the image known as 'Poor Taff', which shows a poverty-stricken gentleman riding to London on a goat, this exhibition will explore how the Welsh people were portrayed in the popular press in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Curiously, as the painted versions, engravings and cartoons suggest, the originally satirical image was adopted by some Welsh people as an acceptable representation of national identity.

The exhibition will explore how stereotypes of Welshness and Welsh identity evolved over time.
