The Marquess of Anglesey Column

Set above the Menai Strait with panoramic views across to Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), the Marquess of Anglesey’s Column is a striking 27-metre Doric monument built in 1817 to honour Henry William Paget, hero of the Battle of Waterloo.

The monument was designed by Thomas Harrison, with a brass statue of the Marquess added in the 1860s. After climbing 115 steps to the top, visitors are rewarded with a breathtaking view over the Menai Strait, Anglesey, and the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia).

The site is also of international geological significance, set atop a rare blueschist rock outcrop formed over 570 million years ago, making it a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) within the GeoMôn UNESCO Global Geopark.
