The tidal Bell at low tide on the Beach in Cemaes surrounded by lichen covered rocks and seaweed

The accessible centre features a brand new heritage experience — a place where visitors can learn about the bygone era of Cemaes and the Llanbadrig area.

Cemaes is the most northerly village in Wales. In earlier days it was known as Porth Wygyr and is referred to as one of the busiest ports in mediaeval Wales. Today it is a peaceful harbour, but at one time it was a bustling industrial port exporting china clay, bricks and ochre and importing everything a rural community needed but could not supply itself.

From Stone Age nomads, its connection to the native Welsh Princes, right through to its more recent maritime and industrial heritage.

The centre takes a look at Cemaes’ heritage by retelling the life stories of some of its most interesting and most notable characters – Portraits of Cemaes. It also exhibits an art collection reflecting how a group of artists were inspired by Cemaes’ landscape and rich heritage.

The centre re-opened on 30 April 2015 by Cwmni Cemaes Cyf who worked with volunteers from the community to form a permanent exhibition and a conference/training room available to hire.

Caffi Banc serves delicious homemade food, barista coffee, specialist teas and gluten free produce. Why not come and relax in our dog-friendly garden overlooking the river Wygyr.

Cemaes Heritage Centre is a Visit Wales tourist information point, providing information about where to stay, what’s on and how to get about.
