People walking on the stepping stones at low tide

Route description and map download for section 8 of the Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path.

Route description

If heading from the direction of the A4080, head down the lane towards the Menai Strait. Next to a letterbox turn right down a lane. Otherwise, from Moel y Don, head away from the Straits and take the first turning left. Carry on along the lane keeping left at a sharp bend and passing a few properties to your right.

This next section may be unavailable for an hour either side of high tide. At a sharp right-hand bend, with a drive going off to the left, the high and low water options split.

High water

Turn right up towards Porthamel farm. Bear left by the farmyard onto an unsurfaced track. Carry straight on and the path joins a surfaced road, passes a number of access roads to properties including Bryn Llwyd, and comes out at a T-junction. Turn left and shortly you will come out at a grassy area and a junction by Llanidan Church. Turn right.

Low water

Turn left, and then bear right off the drive, through a gate and down a semi-enclosed track. Follow the track and at the bottom go through the gate and turn right along the shore. Before reaching the cottage on the shoreline, cross a stream, then bear right up a track. Follow the track round a right-hand bend, on joining another track go straight on and you’ll approach Llanidan house and Church. Go past the church and on reaching the grassy area at the junction bear left.

Opposite the entrance to Llanidan Farm, turn left over a stile into a field. Head straight across the field, towards the top right-hand corner of the wood in front of you. Go through the gate and bear right along a path through the wood. Bear left on reaching a cleared area, past the way-marker and then through another gate. Bear left and then right through the double gates and follow the path along the left hand edge of a field. Go through two more gates and continue along the edge of the fields. After the next gate go straight ahead through the middle of the field with Plas Trefarthen on your right. Go over a further two gates either side of a track and into a field. Cross the field, through a kissing gate, and bear left towards the pine trees in the corner. Go over the final gate and turn right along the shore. Soon you will join a road. Continue straight on.

Continue past the Sea Zoo, and at a road junction continue straight on. Go past Foel farm and the former Mermaid Inn, and the road ends onto the shore. Follow the shore, and after around 600m turn right and up and through a gate. Cross a private bridleway and go straight on over another stile and up the field towards Cae Mawr farm on the horizon. Go over a couple of stiles to come out on the drive at the farm. Turn left. Go past a couple of tracks, and on meeting a lane turn right.

Follow the lane for just over a kilometre, until you pass a number of houses including Awel y Môr on your left and Glasfor terrace on your right. Just after this, take a left through a gate along a grassy track. Go through a double set of farm gates and keep left to go over a ladder stile. Turn right and proceed up the field towards Tan-Twr. Go through a gate, past the house, along the drive and out of the entrance gate. Turn right along a lane, and then shortly turn left into a field. Go up the field, over a stone stile, to join a drive and follow it up to Cae’r Llechau. At the house bear right. Go through a white gate, past some outbuildings, and along a track. At a junction in the tracks turn left and proceed down an enclosed track. At a left-hand bend turn right through a kissing gate. At the next kissing gate turn left and proceed along the fenced path along the edge of the next field. Go through the gate, turn left (right into Dwyran) and over a stile.

Carry straight on; cross a drainage ditch and following a stream on your right you will cross a large embankment. Soon you will join the banks of the River Braint. Keeping the river and a stone wall on your right you’ll come to a drainage ditch and a gateway (there’s an old stone stile in the wall on your left). Go through the gateway and continuing alongside the river you’ll come to some stepping stones.

Tidal restriction

The stepping stones are tidally restricted and may be impassable for around an hour either side of high tide. We would suggest that you consult a tide table when planning to walk this section to avoid this.

Cross them, carrying straight on, past two houses, through a gate, and join a straight track up to a main road. Turn left, along the A4080 for a short section to the mini roundabout.

Go straight on, to arrive at the car park at Llyn Rhos-Ddu.
