Welcome to Anglesey

Meerkat at Pili Palas

Family friendly: A feast of family attractions

There’s a full day (and more) in store, taking in everything from seahorses to farmyard ponies. Pick and choose from the following since you won’t want to overdose on everything all in one go.

Meerkat at Pili Palas
Start from
Menai Bridge
Finish at
Newborough
Distance
About 12 miles

Pili Palas, Menai Bridge, is a Noah’s Ark of animal activity. Look out for Atlas moths (with a wingspan of 12 inches/30cm you can’t really miss them) fluttering amongst the other colourful inhabitants in the tropical Butterfly House. Macaws, cockatoos and African grey parrots are just some of the residents in the Bird House. In Lizard Land and the Meerkat Tunnel you’ll see… well, you’ve guessed it.

Scorpions, giant millipedes and huge stick insects are some of the invertebrates from around the world in the Bug Zone, while the giant bird-eating tarantula and Burmese python are the stars – if that’s the correct word – of the Tropical Hide and Snake House. On a cuddlier note there’s also a Pets’ Corner, Farmyard and Barn. And outdoors there are plenty of play areas.

Follow the A4080 to Brynsiencyn and turn left following the sign to Anglesey Sea Zoo. Like Pili Palas it’s a great all-weather family attraction. Not that you won’t come across water here. It’s the lifeblood of this multi-award-winning attraction, which takes visitors of all ages on a deep dive into an underwater world and the creatures that live in the seas around the British coastline.

You’ll have an up-close view of seahorses, octopuses, lobsters and lots more aquatic wildlife, realistically presented in environments that recreate crashing waves, a shipwreck and kelp forest. It’s an educational and entertaining experience with a serious purpose: the zoo plays an important conservation role, with a seahorse breeding programme and lobster hatchery.

The zoo, on the banks of the Menai Strait, is almost next door to Foel Farm. In complete contrast to its near neighbour, Foel Farm is an experience of life on dry land at a genuine working farm.

There’s a lot to get stuck into, including farm walks, tractor and trailer tours and hands-on encounters with the residents when you meet and feed the animals. A giant sandpit and huge jumping pillow are also big hits with the kids.

Everything is on a miniature scale at Anglesey Model Village at the approach to Newborough (it’s only a few miles from Foel Farm via the B4419/A4080). This microcosm of the island is a Lilliputian version of many of Anglesey’s landmarks, from Beaumaris Castle to the railway station at Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, adorned with the town’s world-famous tongue-twisting placename featured in its full glory. There’s also a garden and outdoor play area complete with maze.

Keep an eye open for special events held at Anglesey Model Village and attractions throughout the island, ranging from medieval re-enactments to conservation projects, fairs to festivals.
