Sustrans is the UK's leading sustainable transport charity. Our vision is a world were travel benefits health and the environment
Every day we are working on practical, innovative ways of dealing with the transport challenges that affect us all.
Sustrans have developed two National Cycle Network Routes across the island to showcase the areas excellent network of quite lanes and traffic free paths. Lôn Las Cymru, National Route 8, starts/finishes in Holyhead and runs around the southern edge of the island before it crosses to the mainland and heads for Cardiff! This Route heads out of Holyhead via Penrhos Country Park and the Stanley Embankment before it passes the airfield at Valley where you will regularly see RAF jets practicing their landings.
Lôn Las Cymru then uses the quiet lanes to reach Soar and Bethel before it drops down onto the Malltraeth Marsh and joins Lôn Las Cefni, which connects both National Routes. From Pont Marquis it is possible to cycle to Malltraeth or Llangefni, or continue on Route 8 to Llangaffo and Llanddaniel Fab then onto Menai Bridge via Llanfair PG with a link to the railway station. At Menai Bridge the Route crosses the famous bridge and heads for Caernarfon along the southern side of the Menai Strait.
The North Wales Coast cycle way, National Route 5, also starts/finishes at Holyhead before it crosses the centre of the island on its way to Chester. Routes 8 & 5 follow the same path out of the port town before splitting to go their separate ways in the village of Valley. This Route passes Llynon Mill at Llanddesusant, which is Wales only working windmill and provides an excellent spot to rest those legs. Llanerchymedd is the next town on the Route and provides a number of places to stop and get some supplies. The excellent network of quiet lanes then takes you towards Llyn Cefni where it is possible to pick up the northern end of Lôn Las Cefni. After Pentraeth you drop down to the Menai Straits and the pretty town of Menai Bridge where you can cross the bridge to reach Bangor and head eastwards towards the coastal towns of North Wales.
Both National Routes can be ridden as a circular tour of the island, with the mountains of Snowdonia providing a wonderful backdrop, or mixed with Lôn Las Cefni and the four ‘bird’ routes to create a variety of route options that take you into the real heart of this special island.
